Life….or Something Like It

This made me laugh.

I was going to get out and run this morning. I got my new Bondiband hat in yesterday, and was stoked that I was going to get to try it out in “cold” (UM… remember I’m from TEXAS…anything below 60 degrees is “cold”) weather. But, that has been put on hold for just a bit. My girly woke up not feeling well, and is sacked out on the couch as I type. I don’t feel good about going out to run and leaving her on her own….just in case she wakes up and needs me for something. From the way she’s snoring, I doubt that will happen but you never know. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I took yesterday off, since I ran on Sunday. So of course, now my mind is going into overdrive about slacking off. Get over it. That’s what I’m telling myself, let’s see if it works. I’m not counting today out completely, since there’s a lot of day left. I hoping that after she wakes up, she’ll feel a ton better and later this afternoon I can either hit the road or go to the gym. BUT, if that doesn’t happen, it’s still all okay.

It’s just a little over a month and a half until the half marathon! I don’t think it’s sunk in yet, that it’s actually going to happen, and that I’m actually going to run it. My next really long run is scheduled for 11 miles (there’s a shorter long run before that one), and luckily (if that’s a word that can be associated with running 11 miles) I’ll be in Waco and can run the course they will use for the half. I’d like to run it at least once before the event, just so I know what I’m in for. I should be able to get most of it completed that day, and it should give me a good feel about what to expect. I’m also hoping for nice weather on race day, but being Texas it could be 80 degrees or -20. Who knows.

Well, I guess that’s it for today. I know this post didn’t really have a point, and was a bit on the boring side, but so is doing laundry.

Mother and Son Bonding

“Mom, can I start running with you?” My son, who is 14, asked me that the other day. He also asked me to show him some upper body weight routines as well. My next confession may throw me into the “worst mom ever in the history of mankind” category, but I have never pushed my kids towards sports or anything like that. Oh, I’ve asked them off and on “are you interested in playing X”, or something of that kind, but I’ve never pushed. I played sports in High School and really enjoyed it, and for most of my adult life I have enjoyed being active, going to the gym, etc. So, when Judah was 5 we put him into soccer (like every good American family should do, right), but he soon showed me that if he wasn’t interested in playing… well, he wasn’t going to play. I admit, I was a bit bummed but I wasn’t going to make him do something that he wasn’t enjoying. End of discussion.

So, you can imagine my surprise when he came up to me and asked if he could start running with me. THIS is what I wanted all along. I want them to be motivated INTERNALLY, because then it will be something lasting and enjoyable. And, the fact that he wanted to run with me, just made my day. We are going to start running together on MWF (my runs are on Tues. and Thurs.) doing the couch to 5k program. Once he builds up we can start running on Saturday’s together, too. I’m also going to buy some hand weights for him to use at home. Our deal is that he will workout at home until January, and then we’ll see about a gym membership.

We are starting next week. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes!
