New Watch

This weekend I got a new watch. I had an inexpensive one from Wal-Mart that I had been using.  I liked it but the only problem is it only had one countdown timer. So when I would run intervals I would have to set it for 5 minutes let it count down, then reset it for one minute let it count down, reset to 5… you get the idea. I figured as I start adding long miles (5 plus) this could become a pain in the old patootie, so I went ahead and invested in a Timex Ironman that Beth had suggested to me (PLEASE don’t get any ideas that I’m going to do an Ironman… just sayin’) . Mine is the same model as above, only in pink (Academy only had pink and black so I went with the pink).

I really like this watch! It has TWO interval timers you can set independently, and you can have them cycle over and over. So you can run, and when your first interval time (say 5 min) is over it will beep and then your second time starts immediately! No buttons to press until your done with your run. How cool is that? The one thing I have found that helps is if you set it for MINUTES as opposed to HOURS. This morning I had set the first timer for 08:00, not even considering that someone would want an interval of EIGHT HOURS. When I looked down after a while (13 min. actually) 07:47 my first thought was, “Surely I’ve been running for more than 3 minutes!” Then I thought maybe I set the watch wrong, and instead of “Repeat” after the timer was done I was supposed to put “Stop” and it had skipped the second interval time and just restarted the first. So, I tired setting it to 08:00 with it stopping after that was done. Again I looked down after about 5 minutes and saw 7:55… I KNEW I had run more than 5 seconds and that is when the light bulb went off. DUH.

I still don’t know who would need a running watch to count down 8 hours of ANY physical exercise, but it’s good to know I can. Heck, I could interval 99:99 / 1 minutes if I ever needed to. Right?

I did it! I did it! I did it!!

Did what, you ask….. I ran 5 miles!!!!!! YES! My pace was 5mph (so of course I did it in about an hour). While this isn’t blazing fast, I am so happy with the result. I did a steady 5 min run/ 1 min walk pace and felt FANTASTIC through the whole run. I am so pumped right now, it’s not even funny… ok, maybe it is a little. If I said I wasn’t a little nervous while setting out today I’d be lying, but I had my course planned out and that really helped. I could say to myself, “Ok, that’s 1 mile. Right here that’s 2″… and so on. (Erin, I know I’m probably killing the grammar right now….sorry, hope you aren’t getting twitchy).

I’m off the rest of this week! YES!

Fabulous Fruit Smoothie

Fabulous Fruit Smoothie:

1-1 1/2 cups of ice ( I use Sonic ice)

a handful of frozen dark sweet cherries

a handful of frozen pineapple chunks

a medium banana

V-8 Splash Fruit Medley Juice (1-2 cups or around there)

Blend it all up until smooth. This is sooooo good!! And with the V-8 you are getting some veggies too!! Rachel loves it, so you know it’s gotta be good!

Happy Smoothie making!

Move on Down the Road…

Just checking in. It’s been a while since my last post, so I thought it was time to say something. I have just logged 160 miles since January. That leaves me a measly 845 miles to go (until I reach my goal of 1005 miles for the year). That means I have finished 16%… only 84% remains. I am really unsure if I will reach my goal, but I’m going to give it my best shot. When you crunch the numbers it looks like this:  I’ve been running for 2 1/2 months, which in turn breaks down to about 6.4% per month. So, If I have 9 1/2 months left I will only get another 60.8% in (which I think leaves me 7.2% shy). BUT, my mileage will also increase as the year goes on, so I’m still holding out hope (I know you wanted a math lesson today).

In other news, well, I really don’t have other news. Play practice starts on Saturday, so that will keep me busy. The show is Tom Sawyer (with our local kids theater) and I’m going to be the stage manager. It should be fun. Other than that life is pretty much normal. Home school is going well… at least the kids seem intelligent, Phil’s working, and I’m doing laundry. I do a lot of laundry (especially since I’ve started running). I still haven’t figured out why this family has to have all these clothes, but what are ya going to do? In Heaven there will be no more laundry…. that’s for sure. Hope you have a great weekend!

Peeps Rock!

I woke up not feeling it. I didn’t want to go run. I was tired, sleepy just not in the mood to do it (that’s what she said… again I crack myself up). So,  I got on Facebook and put out a general call to my peeps for someone to tell me to get going. They rose up and met that challenge, and as a result gave me the motivation to get out there and run. It wasn’t my best day. I felt sluggish and slow. But, I ran 4 miles today five seconds faster than last Saturday. I ran 3.1 miles 13 seconds faster. My pace was one second faster. All of this encourages me, but not as much as all my friends on Facebook did.

I’m exhausted. More so than last week… who knew running 5 seconds faster could take it out of you like that! I’ve been taking Glucoseamine for my knees (mainly) and have been out of pills for a couple of days. I don’t know if it’s that, or just my general old age, but my knees are hurting more today than usual. I will probably take some Tylenol here in a bit. But in general, I feel really good. Bottom line… PEEPS ROCK!

10 Weeks

This week marks the tenth week of my “new regimen”! TEN WEEKS! That is crazy to think about. I think it’s starting to become part of my lifestyle, at least I hope it is. Today was a cross-train day, so I decided to walk, and I could really notice a big difference from 10 weeks ago. Today I WALKED at 4.1 mph. While that may not seem majorly fast, when I started this whole thing my “running” pace was 4.3 mph…. and that was with me breathing HARD by 2 or 3 minutes (okay… maybe at even 1 minute). Today’s walk was a breeze my heart rate never got up above 120. I felt great.

I know I am no where near a fast runner (not sure I’ll ever be considered that), but when I run outside I average about 5.0 mph and I’m very happy with that. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to a 10 minute mile, and really if I never do, I think I’ll be able to still be very happy. My whole goal is to do something that I CAN maintain, and WANT to maintain. I want to keep it enjoyable and fun. I suppose if that means never getting to a 10 minute mile, it’s okay. If it means getting to a 10 minute mile, that’s okay too. See, I’m totally flexible.

Something, Anything…

I haven’t been posting as much as I’d like to, mainly because I feel that I don’t really have anything interesting to share. I’m doing good, keeping on my schedule… and really after a while, that doesn’t make for interesting reading. I can just hear it now,  “Oh great. Her she goes again, telling me that she ran today…. woohoo”.  Today marks my 58th day of doing this. It also marks 129.89 miles (for anyone interested, that is 2.239482758 miles per day).  My longest run has been 4.5 miles and I haven’t gotten any bloody toes or blisters. Yet for all my accomplishments 13.1 miles seems a long way away.  I know I will get there eventually and need to be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and I sure the heck won’t run 13.1 miles in a day either (well in January I will, but hopefully I’ll be ready by then). I think the Glucoseamine I’ve been taking has been helping…. my knees don’t “crunch” as much when I bend them (they were sounding like Rice Crispies there for a while). This also marks my 58 day of taking a multi-vitamin which if you know me, is a miracle all it’s own. I would love to leave you with something witty, something to make you happy you took time our of your day to read this blog, but nothing is coming to mind right now. Sorry about that.
